Frequently asked questions

Everything important, explained briefly

From pricing to file formats to the print service, here you'll find answers to the questions that come up most often.

Is Worldgenerator free?

Yes. The editor is free to use, you build worlds, sculpt terrain, place assets and export print-ready files with no fee and no watermark. Costs only arise if you optionally submit a paid print order instead of printing yourself.

Do I need an account?

No, not to get started. You can open the editor and start working right away; your progress is then kept locally in your browser. You only need a free account if you want to save worlds in the cloud, continue editing them across multiple devices, or share them in the community gallery.

Which file formats do I get on export?

Each plate can be exported as STL or 3MF. Both formats are read directly by all common slicers (e.g. Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio). You also get a report with dimensions, volume and estimated material weight per plate.

Does it all run in the browser?

Yes. Worldgenerator is a web application and runs entirely in your browser, there is nothing to install. Building, sculpting and exporting happen locally on your machine; a current desktop browser with WebGL is enough.

Can the assets be used commercially?

Yes. The included 3D asset library consists of our own, print-ready curated models, you may use them privately and commercially in your worlds, and they are included in the export. Content from the online library (e.g. Poly Haven) is CC0, meaning public domain without attribution.

How large can my worlds be?

Your world is not limited to a single print bed. Using the multi-plate system, you assemble any number of plates into one large playing field whose edges fit together seamlessly. The practical upper limit depends mainly on your machine's performance and on how many parts you want to print.

Do I need a 3D printer?

Not necessarily. If you have a 3D printer, you load the exported STL or 3MF files into your slicer and print yourself. If you don't have a printer, you submit your world directly from the editor as a print order, then we print it for you.

What is the print service?

The print service is the alternative to printing yourself. You send off your finished world as a print order with your preferred material and quantity and receive a quote with price and delivery time by email. Printing only starts after you have accepted the quote.

How accurate is the scale?

Worldgenerator works in real millimeters. Using scale presets you define how many millimeters correspond to one grid square, for example 25.4 mm (1 inch) for D&D. The exported models keep these dimensions exactly, so minis, doors and cover fit precisely later on.

Can I import my own models?

Yes. You can import your own 3D models and place them in your world. Worldgenerator detects the size of the imported geometry and automatically scales it down to a suitable tabletop scale; afterwards you fine-tune size, position and rotation with the transform tools.
